The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended. To Which is Prefix'd A Short Chronicle from the First Memory of Things in Europe to the Conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great

Isaac Newton

J. Tonson, J. Osborn and T. Longman 1728

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Very Good  |

First edition of Newton's posthumously published foray into History and Chronology. A fascinating attempt to reformulate ancient history in concordance with the bible, with frequent recourse to astronomical arguments. Often considered a diversion, Newton nevertheless conducted a significant amount of research and was said to have been preparing his chronology for publication - a possibility, as an unauthorized version had been published in France three years prior to his death and was rounded debunked, wounding Newton's pride. With a preface addressed to the Queen (Caroline of Ansbach) by John Conduitt, Newton's nephew by marriage. Complete with three pull out maps/diagrams including layouts of Solomon's temple. 4to. (260x210mm) [xiv] 376pp. Recently rebound in a full leather with a speckled Cambridge panel design, reusing the original book-boards. Raised bands. New handmade period style endpapers. Light staining to the first fifty or so pages, not affecting text. A few errant marks to covers and within. Small ink mark to fore-edge. Otherwise tight and clean. A stout copy handsomely rebound. Very good.
