First edition of Ellis' account of experiences in Madagascar. His second book regarding his mission and his most important, in which he is finally granted access to the country and could begin working towards the royal family's conversion. Ellis was a talented writer as well as a keen observer and the topographical and cultural aspects he relayed helped publicize and legitimize missionary work. In 1853 he went to Madagascar at the behest of the London Missionary Society, after much struggle he gained a foothold in the country and the Royal Family would convert in 1869. An important work of history, ethnography and topography. With excellent b/w engravings and fold out map to rear. 8vo. [xviii] 502pp. with 32 pages of adverts to rear.
