The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Omar Khayyam; Edward Fitzgerald (trans); Ronald Balfour

Constable & Company Ltd. 1920

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Very Good  |

First edition of the Rubaiyat featuring the illustrations of Ronald Balfour and the text of Fitzgerald's enduring translation. Balfour is a mysterious artist with a minuscule output. Yet these illustrations, done in his twenties are masterful. Reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley's intricate lines, his drawings move from black and white, to the sophisticated addition of single colours, to explosions of colour. With 38 tipped in plates and numerous b/w drawings around the text. Printed on heavy paper stock. Bound in vellum style Japon paper with gilt titling and mounted image on cover. 4to. (260x200mm). Bumping to edges. Mild toning to covers. Tape residue marks to end-papers. A couple of small marks within otherwise clean and prim. Binding sound. Scarce in this state. Very good.
