Small, controversial book from the great French historian Michelet, in which he examines the attitude of the clergy towards women and family. A fiery and humorous retort to ecclesiastical powers of the day: 'it is true the defenders of the clergy have lately drawn such a picture of marriage that many persons will perhaps henceforth dread the engagement.' Half leather with marbled boards. Significant rubbing to spine and extremities but label and gilt still legible. Foxing to prelims but content is clean and binding is tight. Good overall.
