The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In
Charles Dickens
J. M. Dent & Co. 1905
Binding: Hardback | Condition: Very Good |
Charming quarter leather binding of Dickens' second Christmas story. With 8 full page colour illustrations done by Charles Brock, plus b/w drawings within the text. The Chimes appeared a year after A Christmas Carol, in 1844 and would recapitulate the same themes in a more strident way. Indeed, the faults and redemption of its protagonist, Trotty, are perhaps more meaningful and considered than those of Scrooge. Rebound quarter green mottled leather with floral decoration and label to spine. Green cloth. Top edge gilt with marbled end-papers. 8vo. [viii] 167pp. Some rubbing to top and tail of spine and joints. Previous owner's inscription. Contents clean and binding tight. Very good.
