The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (Lucknow Edition)

Omar Khayyam; (Edward Armstrong) Johnson Pasha (trans)

Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. 1913

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Very Good  |

Scarce translation of the Rubaiyat done by Johnson, from the Lucknow manuscript. Contains 762 quatrains done in a poetic, rhyming style similar to Fitzgerald but aiming to accurately convey the original meaning. It was common to attribute such quatrains to Khayyam and some that appear in the manuscript are surely the work of other poets, as Johnson notes, but he 'took the work as it was found'. Blind stamped decorated cloth. Top edge gilt. 12mo. (180x140mm) [vi] unpaginated but each quatrain numbered. Blue cloth boards have some mild rubbing to edges. Boards slightly bowed. Mild foxing to fore-edge. Contents clean and tight. A bright copy of the scarce edition that compares favorably to Fitzgerald's selection. Very good.
