The first ten volumes of Virtue's stupendous Universal Geography, a detailed cultural, ethnological and topographical study of the Earth that was to meant to run to 24 divisions over a number of volumes between 1878 to 1894. These volumes form the entire European section, comprising of Southern Europe (Greece, Italy etc.); France and Switzerland; Austria-Hungary, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands; The British Isles; The north-east Atlantic. Islands of the North Atlantic. Scandinavia. European islands of the Arctic Ocean. Russia in Europe. and part of Asiatic Russia. With detailed accounts of the various regions of each country plus demographical and economic data. Each volume, as expected of Virtue, features maps and tissue guarded engraved plates of people and places plus illustrations within the text. Green cloth with elaborate gilt decoration. All edges gilt. 4to. (280x200mm) Occasional markings to boards. Rubbing and bumping to edges, especially tops and tails of spines with light fraying. Occasional very mild spotting within, usually to reverses of plates or tissue guards. Otherwise contents clean and bindings tight. A very nice set.
